Novice Apps DBA ?

Hi Everyone,

Its been a while since I have blogged. hope everyone is doing good out there.
I got couple of mails saying, 'I am new to Apps DBA, can you send me some documentations'.
When you work with any COTS (Commercial Off-The Shelf) product, right way to begin would be to see the vendor documentations. Oracle is no different, the nice thing about Oracle is they publish the documentations online to read and work through.

Here is the link for R12 documentation library.

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B34956_01/current/html/docset.html

Here is the link where you can find most of the Oracle documentations online

http://docs.oracle.com

Important thing to note, mostly documents are living entities, Oracle modifies the document where ever applicable. Metalink/My Oracle support documents are more current that doc sets.

If you are beginner starting Oracle Apps DBA, begin reading the below from the doc set (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B34956_01/current/html/docset.html)

Oracle Applications Concepts B31450-01
Oracle Applications Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install B31295-02
Oracle Applications Maintenance Procedures B31569-01
Oracle Applications Maintenance Utilities B31568-01
Oracle Applications Patching Procedures B31567-01

Hope this helps. Till you hear next article keep reading the doc set.

Hi suresh

I read your blog. They are really good and simple. I am also learning R12, 11i, RAC, ASM. I have overall overview and working knowledge of oracle application. Now, I want to go to depth of oracle application.

By working knowledge, I mean, I know how to

>apply application patch
>bounce of application services
>cloning overview
>workflow bounce
like etc

Please guide me how can I acquire knowledge of oracle application in depth. I read oracle documentaion. But It only built your basic knowlegde of oracle apps. Presently, I am working in some company. How much time should one devote to learning in daily life besides working hours.

Please advise. Your advices can build my career.

Regards

Varun

Hi Karthick,

Good way to start and keep up the learning is to read oracle's metalink notes, oracle doc set.
documents will keep go out of date, metalink notes will be rewritten based on the current version.

please go through http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/documentation/applications-089559.html

Hi Suresh,
Thanks for your reply.I have started reading through the links which you have sent.I have one doubt. Can you please clarify?

we have multinode installation (oracle apps r12).

Database tier: dbdev11
Middle tier:
apdev55 (concurrent manager, reports server)
apdev56 (apache, forms, oc4j applications as iweboas1 user)

If we stop the services using adstpall.sh in apdev56 , will it stop concurrent manager?

What are all the scripts it(adstpall.sh ) internally calls to stop?

Thanks
Karthick

Suresh Lakshmanan said...

--email--

Karthick,

No, it will not stop.
check the $CONTEXT_FILE
script will only stop the services defined in $CONTEXT_FILE.
